Steps to protect Mendip Hills from 4x4s Steps are being taken to protect the Mendip Hills from damage by 4x4 drivers who illegally leave the road. Thirty boulders have been installed in a lane at the Blackmoor Reserve to prevent vehicles driving along it. The boulders weigh up to two tonnes so cannot be easily moved, a spokesman for the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) said. Frome Town Council takes over running tourist centre Frome Town Council is to run tourism inquiry services after concerns the local information centre could shut. The centre was one of five in Somerset threatened with closure last year when Mendips District Council proposed to cut their grants to save money.
